Our mission is to advocate for the right of the poor and people of color to live in communities that are safe from environmental impacts; and not bear a disproportionate share of pollution resulting from industrial, governmental or commercial operations or policies.
We want WPYEJC to be recognized as the youth voice for environmental and social justice speaking from the streets. To accomplish this goal, we plan to help you keep up with what's going down on the state and local level as it relates to the policy and the environment. Click here for news
The power of the vote is at the heart of environmental justice. As youth who advocate for change, we intend to address civic education in high schools to prepare young people to vote. Our goal is to empower more high school students to have voice.
The West Philadelphia Youth Environmental Justice Council is a tribute to the life and legacy of Senator Hardy Williams. He was considered the “godfather” of African American independent politics in Philadelphia.
His interest in politics began as a "write-in" candidate for Committee Person in West Philadelphia’s 3rd Ward. He not only won the election, but went on to become the 3rd Ward Leader.
The Honorable Hardy Williams served as a member of the Pennsylvania Senate for 15 years, but his legislative career actually started in 1971 as a State Representative. While in the legislature, he served on numerous Committees and crossed party lines to achieve remarkable accomplishments. The legacy of Senator Hardy Williams is a role model for youth to advocate for environmental and social justice!
