We, The People Civic Education focuses on issues that were identified by high school students participating in CCCEEC, Inc. summer programs between 2020 and 2022. Student members of the West Philadelphia Youth Environmental Justice Council are on a mission to prepare our high school peers to become future civic leaders by researching these issues and solving some of the problems. Students will apply what they learn to overcomes obstacles that prevent youth voter participation. Sign up to participate when WE, THE PEOPLE CIVIC EDUCATION comes to your high school.
This is a unique opportunity for students in the School District of Philadelphia to participate in a model civic education program. Our Youth Council views democracy and the right to vote as a way to advocate for social and environmental justice. During the 2022 summer program, we wrote a bill that will allow 16-year-olds to pre-register to vote so youth can automatically cast a ballot when they turn 18. Now, with the support of a grant from the Department of Education, we're taking the idea into 10 high schools in West and Southwest Philadelphia.
A group of high school students spent their 2022 summer vacation learning about climate change. As Junior Docent Interns, they analyzed climate change data on national, state-wide and local levels from 1900 to 2021. During the six-week period, the Interns investigated the causes, effects and long-term impact of climate, as well as alternative energy sources. It was an exciting summer that included playing Kahoot games and watching numerous Earth/ Environmental Science BrainPop and Flocabulary videos. Now they are ready to personally become part of the climate movement. Find out how to become a Junior Docent Intern and advance to become a Junior Docent. Taking people on climate change tours of Cobbs Creek Park is an awesome experience!
Members of the West Philadelphia Youth Environmental Justice Council are trained to become future community leaders who advocate for change. High school students are given the opportunity to voice their concerns with elected officials and hold them accountable for their positions. As active young citizens we conduct voter registration drives, appear on radio talk shows, and engage with community leaders on behalf of our peers. We, the People Civic Education consists of real-world, youth-led projects designed to make an impact on policy and society. This youth development program is endorsed by the Superintendent of The Philadelphia School District, Dr. Tony Watlington and Ismael Jimenez, the District's Director of Social Studies.
